MAKING WAVES

For a year now, she's been at the helm of the container business team at the Port of Rotterdam Authority and loving every minute of it: Hanna Stelzel is committed to creating a seamless supply chain and raising awareness about the prosperity that containers bring us every single day. ‘We can’t take anything for granted.’

‘We must not take our prosperity for granted’

She believes that dreams can be realised, provided you have the courage to articulate them and surround yourself with the right supporters. Refke Gunnewijk is Head of Clean Industry & Transport at the Port of Rotterdam Authority. If it were up to her, the interconnectedness of the economy with ecology would become not only obvious but also taken for granted as soon as possible.

‘A forest brings me as much joy as a storage facility does’

She loves tech and believes in Artificial Intelligence or AI. Her motto is ‘learning by doing’, with a varied team and stakeholders outside the World Port Center. Her goal is to reduce emissions in the port of Rotterdam, driven by digitalisation. ‘That’s how we improve the port,’ according to Saskia Mureau, Director Customer Digital at the Port of Rotterdam Authority.

‘I want to measurably improve the port of Rotterdam’

Mark Stoelinga, the energy and infrastructure manager at the Port of Rotterdam Authority, is keen to hit tangible goals: ‘Kicking off the whole flow towards hydrogen: that’s my goal.’

‘I want to be at the forefront of the energy transition’

With everything he does, he asks himself: what affect does my work or action have on others? Douwe van der Stroom is committed to more than just a CO₂-neutral port. ‘I was recently asked, “Douwe, if you want to change everything, where do you start?”’

‘In the port, you can take measures with a real impact on the climate’

He once stood at the helm of the popular Rotterdam discotheque Off-Corso. He now puts the Rotterdam Makers District on the map as the innovation centre of the port of Rotterdam. Rotterdam tastemaker Jouke Goslinga, RDM & M4H Program Manager. ‘Great things happen on the Maasvlakte, but it’s a long-distance swim. This port area has the chance to give the new innovative port a face.’

‘We owe it to our city and position to achieve real results’

He is going for an entirely sustainable Rotterdam port and society, says Randolf Weterings, Program Manager Electrification and Hydrogen with the Port of Rotterdam Authority. What is the status of his goals?

‘We have passed the point of just talking about hydrogen. It’s really happening now’

“We need to start paddling in time. That way we’ll get to ride the green energy wave”, says Nico van Dooren, Director of New Business Development & Portfolio at the Port of Rotterdam Authority. On the 11th floor of Rotterdam's World Port Center, Nico uses quite a few metaphors in just under half an hour. He does so enthusiastically, to stress the enormous importance of the energy transition for a liveable planet.
